Installing OBIEE on Windows

Earlier this week I started on the task of installing OBIEE on my Windows machine for the first time ever. And by myself. The software download took around 2 hours (really bad home internet…took <30 minutes in the office for all files) and the install took 4 hours, with most of the time coming from frustrating pauses in the installation process. But, I figured all the nuances out and want to list them here for you so you won’t have the same halts as I had…or they will help you get past where you are currently stuck.

  1. Download the software from Oracle at the following URL:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-enterprise-edition/downloads/business-intelligence-2717951.html

    • You will need to download the following highlighted items

      1

  2. I would recommend putting all the downloaded files into a separate folder.

    2

  3. Using 7zip, extract “server-jre-8u77-windows-x64.tar.gz”.

WARNING!!! You may get an “Access Denied” error. If so, choose to “Extract files…” instead of “Extract here…”. You will need to create a new folder and the files will extract successfully.

This 7zip bug took me quite a bit of time to figure out. Don’t let it happen to you!

  4. Using 7zip, extract “server-jre-8u77-windows-x64.tar”.

    5

  5. This will create a folder called “jdk1.8.0_77”. I chose to move this folder to my Java folder already on my machine.

  6. Extract “fmw_12.2.1.0.0_infrastructure_Disk1_1of1.zip”.

  7. This is where the installation guide is a bit incorrect. The guide says the following, however, you will actually need quotes around the first file path to java.exe as “Program Files” has a space in the name.

    10

  8. Find your path to the java.exe file on your machine then the path to the infrastructure.jar file. You will use java.exe to run the executable jar file.

  9. You will be brought to the Oracle Fusion Middleware 12c Infrastructure Installation screens. Click through them until you are done with the intallation.

  10. Now, the next portion took me a bit to figure out. Hopefully I can save you some time in this section! Extract “fmw_12.2.1.0.0_bi_windows64_Disk1_1of2.zip”. It will create the application “setup_bi_platform-12.2.1.0.0_win64.exe”.

    25

  11. Don’t run the executable now! You need disk 2 extracted for it to work. Extract to the same place “fmw_12.2.1.0.0_bi_windows64_Disk1_2of2.zip”. It will create another zipped file called “setup_bi_platform-12.2.1.0.0_win64-2.zip”. Leave this file zipped!

  12. Now double click the red “O”. You will be brought to the BI installation screen.

  13. Congrats! You have now installed OBIEE! If you have chosen to also download the OBIEE client, you can extract and run that installation at this time. I didn’t run into any issues with that installation, so no nuances to report!
